Gizmodo.com has an article about the cost per unit of the iPad according to a recent breakdown by iSuppli (click the photo for the article). The number that stands out the most to me here is the manufacturing cost per device. So:
a) the device is easy to assemble
b) the assembly process is highly automated
c) the cost of labor is very low
d) some combination of all of the above
